Easy Valentine’s Day Project: Heart Ornament made of Yarn

If you’re looking for a fun, yet easy Valentine’s Day project to do with the kids, here is one idea. This project may be too delicate for toddlers but works well with elementary school aged kids. It uses art supplies most of you already have laying around and the materials are cheap.

What you need:

yarn (red works well if you're doing this activity for Valentine's Day)
school glue
little container (a recycled sour cream container for example)
aluminum foil
scissors

pretty ribbon
popsicle stick - optional

Step 1:
Cut a piece of string off the yarn.  It needs to be long enough so you can create a shape out of it with the string overlapping.  Cover an old cookie sheet or work area with a piece of aluminum foil.

Step 2:
Pour some school glue into a small container and mix in a little bit of water. Popsicle sticks work well to mix the glue and water together.  You could also use a straw.

Step 3:
Throw the yarn string into the small container with diluted glue and make sure the yarn soaks up the mixture thoroughly.

Step 4:
Pull the string out of the container using the popsicle stick if you’d like and make sure there is plenty of glue mixture on the string.

Step 5:
Use the popsicle stick or your fingers to form the yarn string into a heart shape.  Be sure to let the string overlap with little spaces between the yarn.  To make sure the heart is thoroughly covered in glue, you may want to pour any leftover mixture onto the heart shape.

Step 6:
Let the heart ornament dry until the yarn is stiff and holds shape.  Depending on the humidity and temperature in the house, this can take some time. You can speed up the process by using a blowdryer but if you don't want to spend this time, just set it aside and leave it for a couple of days.  An old spatula works well to remove the ornament from the aluminum foil if it is stuck. The ornament will be a bit fragile so treat it with care!  Tie a pretty ribbon to it and now it’s ready to hang!

This project is perfect for Valentine’s Day if you’re looking to make a special teacher’s gift or handmade gift for the grandparents.  It also makes a wonderful craft project for Christmas, birthday or other special occasion.
